Murray to Mountains

Porepunkah

Porepunkah is 304km North East of Melbourne and is best reached by travelling on the Great Alpine Road. Conveniently located at the foot of Mt Buffalo, Porepunkah has a long been a popular holiday destination. Its history with the railway dates back many years to a time when the train would bring travellers to this last stop and they would stay at Buena Vista overnight to be taken by horse and dray up to Mt Buffalo Chalet the following day. A 28 hour journey the trip was popular among holiday makers even then. Gold was discovered in the 1850s when the area was known as Ovens Crossing.

Since that time Porepunkah has grown to become a serene, more peaceful destination than neighbouring Bright, offering a relaxed country atmosphere. With a range of accommodation available and local wines produced close by, Porepunkah has something to offer most rail trail users. The caravan parks in Porepunkah are all located on the banks of the Ovens River, adding extra appeal for the rail trail adventurer.

For more information on Porepunkah check out the accommodation, food & wine, and activities & attractions menus or contact the Bright Visitor Information Centre on 03 5755 2275.
