Murray to Mountains

Mountain Biking

North East Victoria has some of Australia's finest mountain bike terrain. The most notable sites are around the towns of Beechworth and Mt Beauty however, there is planty of riding elsewhere in the region.

Mountain Bike Towns

Beechworth and Mt Beauty are popular destination for mountain bikers. Around Beechworth the mountain bike park is the most popular area for getting off the beaten track and provides a truly unique riding experience. A map of the Mountain Bike is available from www.beechworthchaingang.com (under Trails section).

The Beechworth Mountain Bike Park is located on Alma Road. Directions to the trailhead are simple. Follow High Street (behind the old prison) out until you come to a fork in the road. At the fork in the road take Havelock Rd to the right and Alma Road is 50 metres up on you left. Take this for a few kilometres along the dirt road, and you will see the car park for the Beechworth Mountain Bike Park on your left.

Mt Beauty has the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park. It si widely regarded as one of Australia's premier cross country and downhill area. The mountain bike park is conveniently located right in the middle of town, next to Svarmisk on the Bogong High Plain Rd.

There is a great variety of accommodation in both these towns. Check out the Where to Stay section on this website for more details.

Stanley Cross Country

There are plenty of great XC mountain bike trails throughout the North East. One of the most accessible is the ride from Stanley (8km up the road from Beechworth) to the Rail Trail at Taylors Gap (6km from Myrtleford). The trail follows Flagstaff Rd all the way from Stanley to the Great Alpine Rd along the ridge overlooking the Murmungee Basin on your right and Mt Buffalo on your left.

The trail undulates and you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness to tackle this ride. The road is a dirt track the entire way and is only suitable for mountain bikes. You will be adequately reqarded with fantastic views all the way up the Ovens Valley in both directions. The ridge line is a definitive border between the open farmland of the east Ovens Valley and where the genuine alpine landscape begins.

Flagstaff Rd joins the Great Alpine Rd at Taylors Gap and a quick pedal along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail will have you at Gapsted Winery or Myrtleford in no time. Although the trail is well formed and well sign posted the trail is quite remote at times. Water, food and appropriate clothing for riding in the alpine region are neccessary. Rooftop Maps are available from the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre or the Beechworth Newsagent.
